Vicente Ignacio Beltran-Moreno, 22, fled to Mexico after the Feb. 23 abduction of Clay Moore, who managed to free himself, authorities said. Black guilty of forcing phone down white woman's throat - gets six years
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — A jury convicted a man of second-degree domestic assault on Saturday for shoving a cell phone down his girlfriend's throat. Prosecutors said Marlon Brando Gill, 25, of Kansas City, forced the cell phone into Melinda Abell's mouth during an argument in December 2005. Gill denied the charge, claiming that she tried to swallow the phone to prevent him from finding out whom she had been calling. Ex-convict James Cooke Jr. was convicted this morning in the rape and strangulation of Lindsey Bonistall, a college student from White Plains. The jury of eight men and four women found Cooke guilty of first-degree murder and other felonies related to the Bonistall slaying and two other home invasions in Newark, Del., in the spring of 2005. Jurors rejected defense claims that Cooke was mentally ill. Bonistall, 20, was a sophomore at the University of Delaware when Cooke broke into her off-campus apartment and killed her early on May 1, 2005. She was a 2003 graduate of Good Counsel Academy in White Plains. Suspected Deputy Killer Armando Garcia Arrested in Mexico
A fugitive captured by Mexican police in the 2002 slaying of a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy could be extradited in the next two months, and prosecutors plan to seek a life sentence, the district attorney said Friday. Mexican authorities arrested Jorge Arroyo Garcia Thursday in the city of Tonala in western Jalisco state, according to a statement from the U.S. embassy in Mexico City. Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley said in an interview with The Associated Press that prosecutors want to seek the death penalty. But they can't because of a 1978 treaty between the United States and Mexico that allows Mexico to deny extradition if a person faces the death penalty. "I'd flip the switch," Cooley said in an interview. A black man who took hostages in a bar and told the patrons that "white people are going to burn tonight"
was convicted Thursday of attempted murder, assault and other crimes. AIDS-infected Steven Johnson, 39, showed no emotion after the jury, which deliberated a week, found him guilty of more than 50 crimes, some of them designated hate crimes that are punished more severely than other offenses. Johnson invaded Bar Veloce, in Manhattan'sEast Village area, while nine men and six women were inside early June 16, 2002. He was carrying three pistols, a samurai sword and a container of kerosene. He warned, "White people are going to burn tonight." He later told police he left the housing project in Brooklyn where he lived and took a subway train to the East Village, where he looked for "happy" white people to avenge the mistreatment of black people. He shot and wounded three people, including a police officer, and sprayed kerosene on several customers and threatened to set them on fire. Two women caught Johnson off guard and tackled him, and a policeman shot him. Sentencing was set for March 21.

Ronnie Long went to prison for life in 1976 after a Concord jury ruled the 20-year-old black man raped a prominent white woman at knifepoint. It was eyewitness testimony from the victim -- the 54-year-old widow of a Concord textile executive -- that swayed the all-white jury. She had "no doubt whatsoever," she said, Long was the man.
Racial tension in Concord also complicated the case. Blacks were already angry about the shooting of a black youth by a white store clerk. The selection of an all-white jury in Long's trial increased the divide. To enter the courthouse, jurors passed protesters and the courtroom was packed, with whites seated behind the victim, and blacks behind Long. The verdict sparked riots with chants of "Free Ronnie Long." But the case withstood two appeals. The accuser says she danced with suspect Michael Burch, 21, before going into the bathroom. The warrant says Burch followed, forced the accuser to the floor. She says she struck her head on the way down. The warrant says the woman was sexually assaulted while on the floor. As the accuser left the bathroom in tears she was helped by a friend. She was taken to a car outside the Gattis Street duplex.
