Four Teen Athletes To Stand Trial in Cheerleader Rape ECORSE, Mich. -- Four high school football players accused of raping a 14-year-old cheerleader were ordered Friday to stand trial on charges of first-degree sexual assault. Wayne County District Judge Michael Ciungan made the decision following more than 2 1/2 hours of testimony from the girl. First-degree sexual assault is a felony that carries a sentence of up to life in prison. The four students, LaJuan Ewing, 17; Jeffery Jackson, 17; Lamar Toney, 17; and Justin Garrett, 16, will also be tried on one count each of aiding and abetting. The girl testified that Garrett forced her to walk to a house where Toney lived and raped her after classes at River Rouge High School on Sept. 20. "I was trying to push him away. I was telling him to stop," the girl testified. She said each of the four boys raped her over a span of about an hour. Afterward, she said, one of the boys told her: "Hurry up and get dressed. We have to go to football practice." |

![]() Former Metro Police Athletic League boxing trainer Ricky Brigman was indicted yesterday on charges that he sexually molested six boys he met through the PAL boxing program. The Davidson County grand jury indicted Brigman on four counts of raping one boy in 1993-1995, when that child was between 11 and 13 years old; four counts of rape by fraud involving three boys in 1997-1999, when they were between 13 and 15; and four counts of committing sexual battery on two boys, one of them in 1999-2000, when he was 11, and one in 1998-99, when he was 15-17. Brigman has been in the Metro Jail since being arrested July 20 on charges of tricking two boys into letting him perform oral sex on them. He is expected to be arraigned on the indictment in about two weeks. Metro police detectives have said Brigman admitted to performing oral sex on seven boys after asking them to don blindfolds and wait for a woman to enter the room. He resigned his job at the PAL boxing gym after his arrest. He had been a paid employee since 1995 and a volunteer trainer before that. His lawyer asked Criminal Court Judge Steve Dozier last week to reduce Brigman’s bail bond from the current $200,000 to "somewhere in the neighborhood of $25,000." Dozier took that request under advisement. Police Chief Emmett Turner closed the PAL boxing program after Brigman’s arrest, and it has not reopened. (reader link) |

![]() By MORRIS BERMAN BEER AND CIRCUS How Big-Time College Sports Is Crippling Undergraduate Education. By Murray Sperber. The title is from Juvenal: panem et circenses, bread and circuses (that is, public spectacles). Looking out over the bleak cultural landscape of Rome in the late first and early second centuries A.D., the great satirist concluded that these were the only two things that seemed to interest the majority of his countrymen. How different, Murray Sperber seems to be asking, are things for the American empire today? |

Genetics
of athletics: The controversy over race Entine, the Southern
California author of "Taboo:
Why Black Athletes Dominate Sports and Why We're Afraid To Talk About
It,"
has been widely vilified since his controversial book was published in January. Entine told me, "I'm a white liberal Jew - I've been called the 'left-wing Rush Limbaugh.' " I want to acknowledge the evolutionary advantages of blacks . . . science does support the notion that people of West African origin are best at short-distance running, people of Eastern African origin best at long-distance running, whites have superior upper body strength, Chinese have the most flexible bodies, etc. (however he inconsistantly holds PC dognma that) "Science does not support the notion that blacks are less intelligent," Entine emphasized. |
