Police: "We need to find the (black female) attackers," and Westlake Park victim SEATTLE — Her face is bloodied, bruised, and swollen, but the woman seen staggering away from a vicious public beating in broad daylight is still a mystery to police. "We don't know where to find her, and we need to," Seattle Police Detective Renee Witt said. Even veteran SPD officers were astonished when they saw the cellphone video, which shows a defenseless woman being punched, kicked and stomped relentlessly by three other women for almost 60 seconds. The attack happened in the middle of crowded Westlake Park, and no one there seemed interested in stopping it. Officers detained three suspects in a nearby alley, but eyewitnesses would not identify them as the assailants, so officers had no choice but to let them go. "We know who those suspects are and where they live," Witt said. "If someone can lead us to the victim, we would be able to go and arrest them." - (Black-on-white) |
Texas carries out 500th execution with murderer Kimberly McCarthy Texas marked a solemn moment in criminal justice Wednesday evening, executing its 500th inmate since it resumed carrying out capital punishment in 1982. Kimberly McCarthy, who was put to death for the murder of her 71-year-old neighbor, was also the first woman executed in the U.S. in nearly three years. McCarthy, 52, was executed for the 1997 robbery, beating and fatal stabbing of (White) retired college psychology professor Dorothy Booth. Booth had agreed to give McCarthy a cup of sugar before she was attacked with a butcher knife and candelabra at her home in Lancaster, about 15 miles south of Dallas. Authorities say McCarthy cut off Booth's finger to remove her wedding ring. It was among three slayings linked to McCarthy, a former nursing home therapist who became addicted to crack cocaine. - (Black-on-white) |

UK: Wendell Baker guilty of rape Wendell Baker, 56, of east London, had denied raping Hazel Backwell, then 66, at her home in Stratford, east London, in 1997. In 1999, a judge decided the case could not proceed for legal reasons and Baker was found not guilty. A legal change in 2005 allowed retrials in certain circumstances and a new hearing took place at the Old Bailey. Baker will be sentenced on Friday. The judge said he would consider a life sentence. Baker broke into her home as she slept, tied her hands behind her back with flex and then beat and raped her. "After the rape and attack her life was never to be the same again. This led to the last few years of her life being very lonely and sad and very afraid." - (UK) - (Black-on-white) |
